Study by dieticians reveals way to manage metabolic syndrome

A study conducted by dieticians at the University of Rovira i Virgili in Spain, along with other research institutions in the country, has discovered a way of managing metabolic syndrome.
The scientists claim that a Mediterranean diet enriched with nuts could be helpful in controlling the syndrome, which is a combination of medical disorders that increase the risk of patients developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Published in this month's issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, the study involved three groups of people, 61.4 per cent of whom had symptoms of metabolic syndrome.
One of the groups had the Mediterranean diet plus nuts, another combined it with olive oil, while the final set was a low fat group.
It was found that the syndrome went down by 13.7 per cent in the Mediterranean diet plus nuts group, while the olive oil group saw a 6.7 per cent reduction and the low fats group showed a decline of two per cent.
In other industry news, an organisation called Cambridgeshire Together - which aims to cut the rates of childhood obesity - was recently awarded a grant of £160,000.
Part of the money will be spent on employing a dietician, Peterborough Today reported.
