Pilot scheme to allow pharmacists to give pill out without prescription

A pilot scheme which will begin next year in two London primary care trusts will enable pharmacists to dispense the contraceptive pill without a prescription, it has emerged.
The trial will affect people with pharmacy jobs in the areas of Southwark and Lewisham.
If it proves successful, it could be rolled out across the country, meaning patients UK-wide would be able to access the form of contraception over the counter in the same way as they can the morning after pill.
Commenting on the initiative, a spokesperson for the Department of Health said: "We want to improve women's access to contraception and help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies without undermining patient safety."
She added that pilots such as these will help to show whether supplying contraception through pharmacies is an effective way of reducing such pregnancies.
Recently, Stephen Fishwick, head of external relations at the National Pharmacy Association, called for renewed investment in local pharmacies, saying that such centres are more than simply purveyors of pills and that they have the potential to improve the health of communities, the Health Service Journal reported.
