A medical centre situated in the north-west of England has begun offering patients a new radiotherapy treatment, it has emerged.
According to reports in the Wirral News, Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology has become the first facility in the UK to provide cancer sufferers with the service, which is said to significantly shorten treatment times.
Whereas in conventional radiology, one dose of therapy can take up to 30 minutes to administer, the new technology makes it possible for linear accelerators to deliver treatments in one continuous rotation.
Called RapidArc, the technique can reduce the time it takes for patients to complete one session to two minutes.
Angela Heaton, research radiographer at Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology, said: "The benefit to patients will be significant; not only will they need to lie on the treatment table for less time ... but we may also be able to treat more patients as treatment times are reduced."
With roots tracing back to 1862, Clatterbridge registers around 7,000 new patients each year.
