Expert calls for renewed investment in pharmacies

An industry practitioner has called for greater investment in local pharmacies.
According to Stephen Fishwick, head of external relations at the National Pharmacy Association, such centres are more than simply purveyors of pills.
Speaking to the Health Service Journal, he said that they have the potential to improve the health of communities.
He said that, if community pharmacies enjoyed greater funding, benefits would reverberate around the locations in which they are based.
Mr Fishwick went on to say that renewed investment in pharmacies to ensure that they are able to fulfil their potential as a first line for urgent care would mean that pressure at local accident and emergency departments and genito-urinary clinics would be eased.
In other industry news, under plans drawn up by the Department of Health, people with pharmacy jobs are to be able to dispense generic treatments to patients even when their GPs have specified a branded drug, the Pulse recently reported.
