Biomedical scientists gather for forum

A number of people with biomedical science jobs recently gathered in the UK for an industry forum.
The event saw over 220 medical professionals from Guy's and St Thomas' and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation trusts and King's College London gather to discuss advances in the field of understanding blistering skin diseases.
Among the issues discussed was that of translational research taking place within the Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), which is focussing on the development of cell-based therapies for dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa - a condition which causes the blistering and breakdown of the skin and mucous membranes.
Consultant dermatologist Dr Richard Groves said: "Increasingly we are moving cutting-edge preclinical research into clinical applications that bring new gene, protein and cell-based therapies and diagnostic techniques to patients with some of the most serious and debilitating blistering skin conditions."
He added that their work is already accelerating the rate at which advances can be made on behalf of patients.
