Breakthrough made in cardiac research

In news which may be of particular interest to people with cardiac jobs, scientists in the field recently made a breakthrough.
A team of researchers from the US and Germany managed to halt the advance of heart disease in mice, the BBC reports.
The study, which was published in the journal Nature, suggests that tiny pieces of genetic material called microRNA can play a significant role in the development of the disease.
Scientists were able to target and block microRNA in heart cells using a new type of therapy.
They suggested that the treatment proved the potential of the material as a target for drugs in humans with heart disease.
Responding to the findings, Professor Eric Olson from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre said: "This is one of the hottest topics in biology at the moment.
"MicroRNAs are being very seriously considered as a therapeutic target - there is a lot of promise and potential in this area."
In other industry news, a new database detailing cases of sudden cardiac death has been developed using funding from the department of health.
