Speech therapy scheme expanding

A structured programme devised by a speech therapist has enjoyed success and is growing in popularity.
Part of a Sure Start project, the initiative is called Boosting Language, Auditory Skills and Talking (Blast), Children & Young People Now reports.
The course takes six weeks to complete and aims to improve the language and communication skills of three and four-year-olds.
Speech and language therapist Nikki Joyce came up with the idea for it in response to the number of youngsters entering schools with a measurable delay in their speech and language.
Currently, all early years care providers in Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton use the programme and it has spread to other areas.
Dr Gaye Powell, head of speech and language therapy at NHS Plymouth, said: "Foundation stage teachers report that they are able to tell which children have come from settings that have used Blast because the children's attention and listening skills are better than those from settings that haven't used it."
In other news, speech therapist Amy Jensen recently spoke out against what she described as the inefficiency of the disclosure process for medical workers, saying it resulted in staff shortages, the Herald reported.
