Refer an Phlebotomist
Thursday 27th November 2008
In news which may be of particular interest to people with phlebotomy jobs, a study has suggested that universal blood testing for HIV would reduce the number of people developing Aids by 95 per cent.
Completed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and published in the Lancet, the report based its findings on computer modelling.
It projected what would happen if everyone over the age of 15 was given a test each year.
The scientists wrote: "Our model suggests that only universal voluntary HIV testing and immediate initiation of antiretroviral drugs could reduce transmission to the point at which elimination might be feasible by 2020 for a generalised epidemic."
However, the WHO also found that such a strategy is not currently a realistic one due to weak healthcare systems.
The WHO serves as a directing and coordinating authority for health and is responsible for providing leadership, shaping the research agenda and setting industry standards.
