People with pharmacy jobs are to be able to dispense to patients generic treatments even when their GPs have specified a branded drug, it has been revealed.
According to reports in the Pulse, the Department of Health has developed the plans as part of a new deal on drug pricing designed to produce annual savings of five per cent.
The new rules will come into effect in January 2010 and will mean that doctors have to tick a box in order to prevent pharmacists from replacing a branded product with a generic treatment.
Dr Bill Beeby, chair of the General Practitioners Committee (GPC) clinical and prescribing subcommittee, warned that the plan may pose a risk to patients.
He added: "In practice this is going to be very difficult to work and it is very difficult to understand how they are going to get significant savings."
Part of the British Medical Association, the GPC represents GPs in the UK.
