New hygiene measures introduced after infection increase

Increased hygiene measures have been introduced in a number of hospitals in Yorkshire following a rise in superbugs.
A total of five hospitals in Leeds are subject to the new procedures after figures revealed that there had been 70 MRSA cases since April, the Yorkshire Post reports.
In addition, there were 655 cases of Clostridium difficile over the last six months.
Responding to the figures, hospital chief executive Maggie Boyle has written to all staff making clear their responsibilities and an action plan has been drawn up.
"Infection control is a key priority for the trust and we are redoubling our efforts to identify and tackle the root cause of healthcare-associated infections," stated Ruth Holt, chief nurse at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
She added that a dedicated isolation ward has been opened at Leeds General Infirmary and another one is set to open at St James's Hospital.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust employs more than 14,000 staff and handles a budget of £730 million.
