Hospitals receive praise for hygiene standards

Two hospitals have been commended for their hygiene standards following a number of secret spot-checks which were conducted at the centres.
Both the Cumberland Infirmary and the West Cumberland Hospital were visited by inspectors in August and were examined in terms of the patient environment, the Cumberland News reports.
During the impromptu tests, no breaches of hygiene were found, meaning that the North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust - which serves a population of around 324,000 people and employs 3,300 staff - was given the green light.
"A year ago, we were getting poor reports and it was apparent that we had lots of people trying very hard but there was no coordination," stated medical director Simon Raimes.
He added that, along with director of nursing Sandy Brown, he formed the infection prevention team to provide leadership over the issue of cleanliness and give workers clear roles in relation to the issue.
