Pharmacists 'are useful for minor ailments'

People with pharmacy jobs are a useful source of advice for people suffering from minor ailments, a health trust has said.
Wirral Primary Care Trust (PCT) made its comments as part of an initiative to prevent antibiotics being used by people to treat viral illnesses such as colds, the Wirral Globe reports.
Commenting on the campaign, Dr Shyamal Mukherjee, a medical director for the organisation, said: "The PCT fully supports this year's antibiotics campaign to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics.
"It should be everyone's responsibility to conserve antibiotics and promote proper use."
Meanwhile, Birkenhead GP Dr Bruce Taylor added that local pharmacists should be used by people suffering from cases of coughs, colds, sore throats and ear infections as antibiotics will make no difference to the length and severity of the viral infection.
Recently, Wirral PCT scored "excellent" for quality of services and use of resources in the latest annual health check by the Healthcare Commission.
