Refer an Speech and Language Therapist
Tuesday 11th November 2008
A common disorder which affects speech and language has been linked for the first time to a gene, people with speech therapy jobs may be interested to note.
It is hoped that the research, which is being headed by Simon Fisher of the University of Oxford, could offer insights which lead to better diagnosis and treatment, the Times reports.
Around seven per cent of children are said to suffer from the condition.
According to the publication, it is a variation in a gene known as CNTNAP2 which is connected to the disorder.
Dr Fisher stated: "It would be good to identify people who are at risk, because early identification is really important. It seems to be one of the most effective ways of actually improving outcomes, through speech and language therapy."
In other news, a new fast-track clinic to treat sufferers of motor neurone disease which will house a range of medical professionals - including speech therapists - is set to be created in Fazakerley, the Liverpool Echo reported.
