People with biomedical research jobs have been warned that the compounds contained in plastics can have an impact on test results.
According to research conducted by a team from the University of Alberta, "bioactive" additives can come out of equipment such as test tubes, plates and pipette tips.
Along with his colleagues involved in the study - which was reported in the Journal Science - Professor Andrew Holt claims that such additives can have a real impact on the findings of research.
He said that the problem seems to be particularly acute with liquids stored in plastic containers.
Professor Holt added his group of researchers has taken to carefully washing all the tubes and containers they use prior to experiments.
Indeed, before a three-hour experiment is conducted, two hours of washing the equipment takes place.
The scientist went on to say that, although this reduces the number of experiments that can be conducted, it results in more precise data being collected.
