NHS trust reports 'huge drop' in infection rates

The West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS trust has been named the most improved in the country, following a drop in hospital-acquired infection rates.
The Herts Advertiser reported that figures recently published by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show that when compared with last year's numbers, the NHS trust based in West Hertfordshire demonstrated the largest percentage decrease in instances of C difficile infections of all hospital groups in the country.
"Our C difficile infection rates show a staggering reduction in the last 12 months - 86 cases in August 2007 and only four in August 2008," said the trust's chief executive, Jan Filochowski.
He added that these updated figures show an even bigger decrease than the 64 per cent statistic reported by the HPA and explained that isolation wards and improved hand hygiene are two of the reasons for the reduction.
The West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS trust is the product of a merger between Mount Vernon and Watford NHS trust and the St Albans and Hemel Hempstead NHS trust and was set up in April 2000.
