The government has reversed its stance on top-up funding for drugs.
In a statement made yesterday (November 4th), health minister Alan Johnson revealed that he is ending current rules under which patients who choose to top up their NHS care by purchasing treatment and drugs privately lose the right to the rest of their NHS treatment.
Under the new arrangement, they will be permitted to take advantage of both private and public health services.
However, people who do buy drugs as well as continue to use the NHS will have to have them administered away from NHS wards and will be expected to pay for any additional tests and scans associated with them.
The move was welcomed by Association of British Insurers, which said: "This announcement goes some way towards addressing the hugely emotive issue of access to drugs."
However, the effectiveness of the system in practice remains to be seen, it added.
