Tuesday 4th November 2008
In news that may be of particular interest to people with biomedical science jobs, a public meeting is set to take place later this week concerning the future of primate research.
To be held in Brussels on Thursday (November 6th), the event will see politicians, animal rights campaigners and scientists come forward to argue their viewpoints, the Guardian reports.
The meeting is the beginning of a round of debates that could result in the European Union banning experiments on marmosets, macaques and other monkeys in all member states.
Research using such animals is necessary in developing treatments for conditions such as Alzheimer and HIV.
"Basically [the issue] will be passed back and forward between the European Commission and the European Parliament as they wrangle over the key clauses," stated Mark Matfield of the European Coalition for Biomedical Research (ECBR).
A coalition of organisations, the ECBR was set up to address concerns about the revision of a European Directive concerning the use of animals in medical research.
