UK has shortage of radiographers, Conservatives claim

The UK currently has a shortage of radiographers, it has been claimed.
According to the Conservative party, cancer patients are missing out because radiotherapy machines are lacking operators, the BBC reports.
Research conducted by the party found that while guidelines suggest that such equipment should be carrying out 8,000 courses of treatment a year on average, they are being used to perform an average of only 7,400.
The Tories suggest that this shortfall, which is caused by a lack of trained professionals, could mean that 9,000 cancer patients miss out on treatment each year.
"Radiotherapy is vital to fighting cancer. If patients aren't getting the treatment they should be, then it's not surprising that cancer survival rates in this country lag behind European averages," stated shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley.
In other industry news, radiographers at York Hospital recently began using a new wireless digital X-ray system designed by Siemens which enables them to acquire images of patients more conveniently.
