The number of elderly people receiving treatment for foot problems has risen in Glasgow, according to one expert.
Podiatrist David Wylie said that 50,000 such people are being treated, with the majority of his caseload women who experience problems due to wearing inappropriate footwear, the Herald reports.
The medical practitioner suggested that, for many, the shoes worn in the 1950s and 1960s are the cause of current issues.
He said: "People take a short-term view of things. They dance to the tune of fashion today and they pay the price for their vanity in later life. When their dancing days are over, they're hobbling."
Mr Wylie added that once the foot becomes deformed, the skeleton changes and the foot no longer works in the way it should.
Last month, NHS consultant Emma Supple said that people have to "mix and match" their footwear in order to avoid problems with their feet.
