Dieticians help kidney dialysis patients

Kidney dialysis patients at Southend Hospital are managing their condition under the guidance of dieticians and a league table competition.
Developed by Dr Mike Almond and his team of computer specialists, dieticians and pharmacists, the table is referred to as a 'phos graph' and charts the levels of phosphates - a common problem among dialysis patients - in sufferers' blood.
Patients each receive a copy of their progress, which is compared to that of 130 other anonymous patients.
Each month, the rankings of patients are compared when they meet up at the unit.
Dr Almond and the creators of the programme have been presented with a bottle of champagne and a certificate from the British Journal of Renal Medicine for their work in reducing the intake of nuts, chocolate, dairy products and other phosphate-rich foods.
The BBC reported recently that the typical Western diet - which includes salty and fried foods - increases a population's risk for heart attacks by around 30 per cent.
