New line of cardiac treatment announced

In news that may be of particular relevance to people with cardiac jobs, the Department of Health (DoH) has announced that a new line of treatment is set to become the UK's first line of defence against heart attacks.
In a report launched by the department, it was revealed that primary angioplasty will be the emergency treatment administered to 97 per cent of the population in England.
The procedure involves inserting and then inflating a small balloon in the blocked coronary artery, allowing blood to pass through freely.
According to the DoH, using angioplasty as the main treatment for heart attack patients instead of thrombolysis - which involves the injection of clot busting drugs - will save in the region of 240 lives per year.
"The national roll out of the primary angioplasty strategy recommended in the NIAP report will save hundreds of lives each year and improve outcomes for many more heart attack patients," stated health secretary Alan Johnson.
In other news, Coventry's University Hospital and Warwick Medical School recently received an award from the European Society of Hypertension for their research into heart disease and high blood pressure, the Coventry Telegraph reported.
