New hospital scheme reaches landmark stage

A government initiative to construct 100 new hospital schemes by the end of 2010 has reached a landmark stage.
St Helens Hospital in Merseyside, which recently admitted its first patients, is the 100th such scheme to have been completed.
The medical centre is part of a £12 billion building programme devised by the Labour administration to replace aging and unsuitable infrastructure, people with UK medical jobs may be interested to discover.
Funded through a combination of private finance initiatives and public money, the programme is also about helping to improve the patient experience and to modernise NHS services.
"The opening of St Helens Hospital - the 100th under our ten year hospital building scheme - is fantastic news for patients who will now benefit from state of the art facilities and surroundings as well as first class care," stated secretary of state for health Alan Johnson.
St Helens Hospital is run by St Helens & Knowsley Hospitals NHS Trust, which employs more than 4,000 people.
