Health secretary gives go ahead for self-referral schemes

Health secretary Alan Johnson has given the go ahead to a new scheme of patient self-referrals.
According to the politician, more people should have the freedom to self-refer for consultations with speech therapists and podiatrists, among other medical professionals.
He said that such a move would empower patients and lead to a cut in waiting times.
Although some allied health professionals already take on self-referrals, under the news plans, all such people would be able to accept referrals of this kind.
Mr Johnson commented: "Self-referral will help both vulnerable members of society and those with busy lives by providing quicker access without the unnecessary hoop jumping of going to see a doctor first."
In other news, figures produced by the Audit Commission and cited recently in the Times suggested that 20 NHS trusts examined in England were facing mounting debts, while 12 of them had failed to meet targets for three years in a row.
