New superbug research facility to be established

A new UK research facility designed to lead the fight against superbugs is set to undergo construction at the University of St Andrews, it has been revealed.
In a development which may lead to the creation of biomedical science jobs, the centre has been made possible by a funding package from the Wellcome Trust, an independent charity which funds research into improving human and animal health.
The facility will form part of the university's current Biomedical Sciences Research Complex and will focus on serious emerging bacterial, parasitic and viral infections, as well as hospital acquired infections such as the well-publicised MRSA and C difficile.
"Our aim is to improve human health, not just in Scotland, but across the world, by tackling these emerging pathogenic diseases," stated Professor James Naismith, director of the new centre.
He added: "This contribution from the Wellcome Trust is the first step to realising this vision."
