Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 22nd October 2008
A global study of food intake has revealed three global eating patterns, people with dietician jobs may be interested to note.
Citing information that appeared in the Circulation journal, the BBC reports that a typical western diet - typified as being high in salt, fat and meat - accounted for around 30 per cent of the heart attack risk in any population.
Meanwhile, oriental eating patterns which contain a lot of tofu, soy and other sauces were found to make no difference to heart attack risk and a "prudent" diet high in fruit and vegetables lowered heart risk by a third.
Scientists examined the eating habits of 16,000 people in 52 countries in order to collect their results.
Commenting on the findings, Ellen Mason, a cardiac nurse for the British Heart Foundation, said that the important message is that patients should reduce their intake of salty, fried, fatty food, while ensuring they increase consumption of fruit and vegetables.
In other news, Department of Health figures cited recently by the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph suggested that obesity cost the UK's NHS £167 million last year.
