Outbreak of infection caused hospital ward to close

A UK hospital ward was forced to close to new admissions recently as a result of an infection outbreak.
According to reports in this is hampshire.net, five patients and one member of staff at Southampton General Hospital were affected by the bug, which caused diarrhoea and vomiting.
In news which may be of particular interest to people with sterile services jobs, Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust - which employs a total of around 7,500 members of staff - was forced to introduce a number of measures to tackle the infection.
It reminded visitors to wash their hands both before and after visiting clinical wards, to avoid sitting on the bed of the patient they were going to see and to make sure that food gifts were covered or wrapped.
At the time of the outbreak last week, Tracey Cooper, consultant nurse from the hospital's infection prevention team, said: "We have learned that taking aggressive action when we start to pick up cases can prevent further spread of the condition."
The ward has now been reopened to new admissions.
