New computer programme to assist in speech therapy

A new computer programme is set to help speech therapy patients in the UK.
Devised by researchers at the University of Sheffield, the technology is intended as a means of improving the recovery of stroke patients, Yorkshire newspaper the Star reports.
According to the publication, a trial of the software is underway and, if it proves successful, it could be rolled out across the NHS.
Called Sword, the programme enables patients to practise sounds and words while they are at home.
Neuroscientist Rosemary Varley, who developed the technology along with speech scientist Dr Sandra Whiteside, said Sword has been designed so that someone with little or no experience of using a computer can utilise it.
She said: "Simply switching the computer on will start up the programme. It will take the user through a number of carefully graded training levels."
Meanwhile, a number of people with speech therapy jobs have been involved in the implementation of a new scheme which is designed to enable children with speech and language difficulties to integrate into mainstream school classes, the Bolton News reported.
