Refer an Podiatrist
Thursday 16th October 2008
Podiatrists in the UK are seeing an increasing number of patients come to them with shoe-related injuries, it has been suggested.
Speaking to the Argus, Helen Morrell from Brighton Podiatry said that whereas in the past she would treat one such injury around every two to three months, she now sees two a week.
She commented: "When I started my practice 20 years ago, everyone was copying Princess Diana and wearing flat shoes. We didn't have anything like the same number of problems then."
The expert went on to suggest that the combination of high heels and thin straps women often look for in footwear have contributed to the increase in injuries.
Ms Morrell added that the fact that people wear this kind of shoe for longer periods now - to go to work in or to go clubbing in - has made the situation worse.
Last month, fellow podiatrist Emma Supple said that people need to "mix and match" their choice of footwear in order to avoid injuries.
