MRC awards funding for new drug effects research centre

In news which may interest those looking for biomedical science jobs in the UK, the Medical Research Council (MRC) has revealed it has awarded £3.7 million to the development of a new centre to research drugs.
The facility will see scientists from the universities of Liverpool and Manchester work with pharmaceutical companies to gain information about the adverse side effects of drugs.
It is hoped that the MRC Centre for Drug Safety Science will pave the way for the development of new medicines.
"Our team will focus on drugs that have the ability to treat disease but may, in some cases, react badly to the biology of individual patients," stated Professor Kevin Park, director of the new centre.
He added that the initiative will bring together experts from research institutes, the government, academia and industry.
A publically-funded organisation, the MRC aims to encourage and support research to improve human health.
