Two north-east hospitals have initiated fundraising appeals in an attempt to buy specialist cardiac equipment, it has been revealed.
Bishop Auckland General Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital, which are both run by the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, are seeking to get enough money to purcahse 3D echocardiograph machines.
Medical staff hope that the devices will assist them in detecting patients' heart conditions much earlier, the Northern Echo reports.
The appeal has the support of 77-year-old Bert Gibson, who had to travel to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle after discovering he had heart problems in 1987.
He said: "I would really like to see the people of Bishop Auckland and the Dales receiving as much treatment as possible here in the area so they have as little travel as possible during this anxious time."
Launched by the British Heart Foundation, the money generating appeals need to raise a total of more than £200,000.
