Device 'leads to increased hospital hygiene'

A simple device used to hold up patient drips increases hygiene on hospital wards, according to its inventor.
The so-called J Hook, which enables medical staff to hang drips from curtain rails, is said to cut down infections because it is easy to wash and means nurses are not left wheeling around "filthy" drip stands, people with sterile services jobs may be interested to note.
John Edwards, himself a nurse, initially developed the hook as an impromptu solution to a shortage of drip stands in his hospital, the Daily Mail reports.
His idea has now been taken on by a manufacturer and the hooks cost £9.99 to purchase.
Mr Edwards said: "I was standing with two drips in my hand when I looked up at the curtain rail and had my lightbulb moment."
In other hospital hygiene news, a recent report on Rochdale Online revealed that Pennine Acute NHS Trust cut the number of MRSA infections among its patients by almost three-quarters in a year, only experiencing eight cases between April and June this year compared to 26 during the same period in 2007.
