Refer an Audiologist
Friday 3rd October 2008
Students striving to be selected for UK medical jobs should have a better understanding of how to communicate with deaf people, it has been claimed.
In news which may be of particular interest to audiologists, Michael Paddock from King's College London School of Medicine argues in an article on BMJ.com that healthcare professionals currently lack basic skills for communicating with such patients, OnMedica
reports.
According to the expert, who claims that nearly nine million people in the UK have hearing difficulties, deaf communication skills - such as how to check hearing aids - should be added to the medical curriculum.
He added that a sensory awareness development and training programme has already been added to the curriculum at King's College London.
One of the UK's largest and oldest medical schools, King's College London School of Medicine claims to receive more applications from students wishing to embark on medical courses than any other institution in the country.
