People with biomedical science jobs have been among a team of researchers involved in the development of a new tool designed to pick up on the early signs of breast cancer.
Among the medical centres involved in the study were the Helsinki University Central Hospital, the European Synchrotron Radiation's biomedical experimental station and the University Hospital of Grenoble.
The technique, which could eventually be used in hospitals, allows medics to produce a three-dimensional visualisation of the breast with a high spatial resolution that is very sensitive to alterations in the tissue.
It is hoped that the tests could help to reduce the number of tumours missed by current detection methods.
Commenting on the technology, main research author Jani Keyriläinen said: "If we compare the images with X-ray mammograms and conventional CT images, we can confirm that this technique performs extremely well."
According to Cancer Research UK, breast cancer is now the most common form of cancer in Britain.
