Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Friday 26th September 2008
A cardiac nurse has spoken out to calm the concerns of patients and medical professionals over a type of drug used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
According to a recent study conducted by researchers from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in the US and the University of East Anglia in the UK, anticholinergic medication increased the risk of strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular death by 58 per cent.
The research, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, focused on the drugs Atrovent and Spriva.
In response to the findings, Judy O'Sullivan, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: "This recent review does not provide conclusive or robust evidence to link anticholinergic inhalers to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease," the Nursing Times reports.
She added that the drugs provide symptom relief for many people with COPD and that people taking them should not stop based on the results of this study alone.
