Manchester 'to become medical research hotspot'

Manchester hopes to become a major resource for breakthroughs in medical research in the coming years, thanks to a major recruitment drive.
A total of 12 new academic chairs are being sought for the city's biomedical research centre (BRC) - a status it was awarded in March of this year.
It is hoped that people will recruited in the fields of hearing, cardiology, pharmacology and paediatrics, among other sectors.
"By combining the outstanding quality and breadth of research activity within the UK's largest university with the excellent clinical skills and knowledge of Trust staff, we are building a partnership that will make a huge difference to patient care and treatment over the next few years," said professor Tony Freemont, head of the cscool of clinical and laboratory sciences at the University of Manchester.
The BRC is one of a dozen partnerships between the NHS and universities that work to adapt biomedical research into new technologies, treatments and drugs that can benefit patients.
It is set to focus mainly on transitional, patient-focused clinical research.
