UK hospitals record success in superbug fight

Hospitals operating in Britain are having increasing success in the battle against superbug MRSA infections, new figures suggest.
Produced by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the statistics show that there were 836 cases of such bloodstream infections between April and June this year, representing a decrease of 14 per cent compared to the previous quarter.
In addition, the figures show a fall of 36 per cent compared to the corresponding three-month period last year, people with hospital doctor jobs may be interested to note.
"The next challenge for the NHS will be to ensure that the downward trend continues and that we move to a position of zero tolerance," stated Professor Peter Borriello, director of the HPA's Centre for Infections.
He added that the fall in infection rates is indicative of the "huge efforts" being made by workers in the NHS.
In response to the figures, prime minister Gordon Brown published an open letter praising staff in the health service.
