Wednesday 17th September 2008
Doctors have condemned the decision made by Suffolk Primary Care Trust (PCT) to get rid of a head and neck cancer surgery, according to reports in the Ipswich Evening Star.
Under plans revealed by the trust, the surgery will move from its current location in Ipswich Hospital to Norwich, people with UK medical jobs may be interested to discover.
According to the Ipswich Evening Star, the justification behind the PCT's decision is that the closure of small centres in favour of specialist facilities that treat a larger number of people could improve survival rates.
Recording her anger at the move, British Medical Association Suffolk secretary Dr Janet Massey said: "We are particularly concerned about the impact the loss of good surgeons, who will be some other county's gain, on trauma services at Ipswich Hospital."
Meanwhile, the details of a new hospital in Merseyside were recently revealed.
Costing 250 million, the facility is due to open in 2010 and will be one of the area's biggest medical centres.
