Research finds considerable hospital overspend

As a result of the energy price rises seen over recent times, some health trusts are facing budget overspends running into millions of pounds, people with hospital doctor jobs may be interested to discover.
This is according to a report conducted by Channel 4 News, which found that NHS costs for gas and electricity will be almost £430 million in 2008-09, representing a rise of £165 million compared to the previous year.
Among the examples provided by the news provider was the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which is anticipating an overspend of £2 million for the 12-month period.
However, Professor Peter Smith, director of the Centre for Health Economics at the University of York, said: "In aggregate, the NHS secured a significant surplus last year and I don't believe there should be too many problems in meeting these costs."
Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that a hospital in the north-east is set to receive an additional £6.5 million in funding in a bid to improve its buildings, the News Guardian reported.
