Flexible doctor training 'a success'

Flexibility in the training of doctors has been praised in an update published by BMJ Careers.
In news that could interest those with hospital doctor jobs and UK medical jobs, flexible, or less than full-time (LTFT), training is increasingly being incorporated through such means as slot shares and permanent flexible posts.
Maternity leave was singled out as a particular area to be "respected and promoted".
The report's authors said that candidates who wanted to train on a LTFT basis in 2007 were as successful in the selection process as full-timers.
They said that in round one of recruitment in 2007, 859 applicants expressed a wish to train LTFT, of whom 376 were appointed.
A 2006 briefing by the British Medical Association regarding flexible training for junior doctors said that such an option was important to improve services and adhere to the European Working Time Directive.
This is because it retains doctors who might otherwise leave the NHS if they cannot work around their other commitments.
