Study launched into A&E patients

In news that may be of relevance to people with UK hospital jobs, a study has been launched into how the number of repeat patients at accident and emergency (A&E) wards can be reduced.
The investigation, which is taking place in south-west Scotland, is being conducted by NHS Dumfries and Galloway - which serves a population of around 146,500.
A report produced earlier this year revealed that a small group of people were responsible for a large number of visits to the unit, the BBC reports.
According to the findings, just 22 patients were responsible for over 200 admissions to the hospital's A&E department, with underlying psychiatric illness identified as the main cause.
The investigation is intended as a means of discovering how the number of such visits can be reduced.
In other hospital news, the Beccles and Bungay Journal recently reported that an investment programme worth £5 million is to be ploughed into a number of Suffolk hospitals this year.
