Under plans being considered by the government, pharmacists may be able to prescribe cholesterol lowering statins.
According to a Pulse report, the Department of Health has stated it will consider proposals which recommend such medical professionals be permitted to conduct vascular checks, assess risks and subsequently prescribe statins, people with pharmacy jobs may be interested to note.
The suggestions have been made by the National Pharmacy Association (NPA), which was established in 1921 as the trade association of community pharmacy owners.
"Full use should be made of pharmacists' knowledge of medicines and their ability to become supplementary or independent non-medical prescribers, for instance to prescribe statins," the NPA proposal stated.
However, Dr Bill Beeby, chair of the General Practitioners Committee, described the suggestion as "foolish", adding that pharmacists are not equipped to monitor patients on a long-term basis or give the necessary lifestyle advice to people at high risk.
