Medical body opposed to NHS compensation reforms

A medical body has made clear its opposition to potential NHS compensation reforms.
Under proposals being considered by the government, patient complaints may be linked to financial payouts in an effort to make the complaints system faster and more responsive.
However, the Medical Protection Society (MPS) has spoken out against the plans, saying the complaints system and the compensation system serve different purposes and therefore should remain distinct, those with UK medical jobs may be interested to hear.
The society stated: "A link between financial compensation and complaints may shift the focus away from providing a full and clear explanation and action to resolve the issues highlighted by the complaint, towards a more limited and cautious response."
It went on to suggest that, in most cases, payouts should be handled through the clinical negligence scheme or the NHS Redress Scheme, once it has been set up.
A not-for-profit organisation, the MPS is a provider of professional indemnity advice to doctors and other health professionals.
