Private healthcare firms 'could be given access to NHS smartcards'

Private healthcare firms in the UK may soon be able to provide their staff with access to NHS Smartcards so that they can view patient records, it has been revealed.
In news that may be of relevance to those with UK medical jobs, the government has announced the plans as part of a move to support more integrated care.
The Department of Health has pulled together a group of representatives, including patients and pharmacists, to examine the issue.
It is part of an initiative being implemented by the government to review the records system and embrace a fuller range of organisations.
The report states: "Future local planning guidance will emphasise the need for the inclusion of plans for non-NHS service providers, including the independent and voluntary sectors as partners, in the use of information and IT to deliver services to NHS-funded patients."
In other industry news, Ludlow-based medical healthcare firm Premier Medical recently revealed it is to expand its workforce in Shropshire by 40 before the end of this year, the Shropshire Star reported.
