Older people 'need better care'

People aged 50 and over are not receiving basic healthcare, research suggests.
Experts found that the NHS and private providers are failing to provide the proper standards of care to patients with ailments such as osteoarthritis and incontinence, the Press Association reports.
Overall, 62 per cent of the care recommended for the over-50s is actually received in England, with the quality of care as low as 29 per cent for osteroarthritis.
The study by the University of East Anglia, led by Dr Nick Steel, was published in the British Medical Journal.
According to the research, doctors are more attentive to conditions where they earn more for assessments, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Older people suffering from depression are being denied the necessary help, according to a report by Age Concern, released this week.
The Daily Mail reported that older people suffering from the condition are often misdiagnosed, given inappropriate treatment or have their depression wrongly considered just a part of ageing.
Age Concern has launched the Down but Not Out campaign in response.
