People with UK medical jobs are to undergo an evaluation of current attempts to cut staff sickness levels.
Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon has given NHS 24 heads a November deadline for the report, according to the BBC.
In December, bosses at NHS 24 were given the target of slashing sickness absence levels to six per cent by next March.
According to the BBC, there has been an improvement recently, with figures dropping from 6.12 per cent in May to 5.97 per cent in June.
NHS 24 chairman Allan Watson reportedly told a review meeting chaired by Ms Sturgeon yesterday: "We do recognise there will be seasonal variation and continuing challenges if we are to be able to sustain this improvement."
Scottish GPs may be asked to open surgeries on public holidays to help NHS 24 cope with increased demand, the Scotsman newspaper reports.
Ms Sturgeon wanted assurance that patients were not left waiting for hours, it said.
