Midwives 'think about quitting'

More than 60 per cent of midwives are considering leaving the profession, according to a new report.
A poll by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) found that three-quarters of the 2,489 midwives surveyed were working up to ten hours extra a week.
In addition, 41 per cent of them said they received no compensation in the form of extra pay or time off in lieu.
Almost a third said their workloads had increased and 91 per cent said the birth rate in their maternity units had grown in the past year.
Dame Karlene Davis, general secretary of the RCM, said: "Midwives' pay is not keeping pace with prices, staff numbers are not keeping pace with the birth rate and investment is not keeping pace with the demands on the service."
Meanwhile, the West Middlesex University Hospital has had to launch a drive for more midwives to cope with its expanding maternity ward.
The Hounslow Chronicle reported that the hospital needs more local midwives to cope with the increased demands at the new ward, which opens this autumn.
Its maternity section already delivers more than 3,800 babies a year and this is expected to increase by around 1,000.
