Call for midwives at West Middlesex Hospital

A drive to attract more midwives has been launched by West Middlesex University Hospital to cope with its expanding maternity ward.
The Hounslow Chronicle reports that the hospital needs more local midwives to cope with the increased demands at the new ward, which opens this autumn.
An open day is being held on Friday.
The hospital's maternity section already delivers more than 3,800 babies every year and the figure is expected to rise by around 1,000 annually with the new opening.
Tonie Neville, head of maternity services at the hospital, said the institution has a consultant midwife overseeing the profession and told the newspaper: "Working with her will give the right midwives the best opportunity to practise and develop as independent practitioners."
More than 60 per cent of midwives are reportedly considering leaving the profession due to increased workloads and working hours.
The UK-wide poll by the Royal College of Midwives found three-quarters of the 2,489 midwives surveyed were working up to ten hours extra a week, 41 per cent of whom said they received no extra pay or time off in lieu.
