Doctors' pay 'linked to performance'

The GP contract which linked about a third of doctors' pay to performance has helped close the gap in care level between affluent and low-income areas, it has been claimed.
A research team from Manchester University studied more than 7,000 GP practices during the first three years of the deal, which began in 2004.
They found standards in low-income areas had improved more quickly, the BBC reports.
In the first year, the least wealthy regions reached their targets 82.8 per cent of the time, a figure that was 86.8 per cent in places with higher average incomes.
After three years, the less affluent areas hit their targets 90.8 per cent of the time and the wealthier ones 91.2 per cent.
Doctors' performance was rated by such factors as disease management and waiting times, while standards were judged on 48 indicators over ailments such as heart disease and epilepsy.
Last month, the BBC also reported an attack by government minister Ben Bradshaw on GPs who agreed not to take other doctors' patients.
In a BBC interview, Mr Bradshaw accused some family doctors of denying patients choice.
But doctors' leaders dismissed it as "absolute rubbish".
