Healthcare recruitment 'must not discriminate'

The importance of not discriminating within healthcare recruitment has been reiterated after a new report found that black and minority ethnic (BME) NHS staff are facing widespread disadvantages.
The Health Service Journal reports on the Race Equality Service Review, which found one region in which every trust showed difficulty for BME people acquiring UK medical jobs and suffering disproportionate grievances once employed.
BME people comprise 31 per cent of those shortlisted for acute trust jobs but make up only 16 per cent of the positions, it was reported.
Despite comprising 15 per cent of the workforce, they are involved in more than half of the bullying and harassment cases in the south east coast region's mental health trusts.
They are also involved in 25 per cent of disciplinary cases overall.
NHS south east coast chief executive Candy Morris told the publication that the organisation recognised that it needed to "do more to address the needs to BME patients and members of the public".
Indian doctors in Britain have alleged that they suffer racial discrimination, according to the Hindustan Times.
The British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin reportedly claimed that immigration laws forced 10,000 Indian doctors to leave the UK in 2006.
