Refer an Audiologist
Thursday 7th August 2008
Doctors in England are to be given free access to an internet-based sign language program in an effort to enable them to provide better services to deaf patients.
Produced by SignHealth - a healthcare charity which was established in 1985 - the SignTranslate program will be available to GPs until July 31st 2009, in news of potential relevance to people looking for audiology jobs.
Commenting on the offering, SignHealth chief executive Steve Powell said: "By funding SignTranslate to be free for every GP in England, we hope that every deaf person will be able to see their doctor when they need to."
The program translates more than 300 medical questions into British Sign Language, providing users with spoken and written translations in up to 12 languages.
In addition, for a charge, GPs will be able to access fully qualified British Sign Language interpreters via a webcam for more complicated consultations.
